Variants & Others

As mentioned in my previous post, I give you:

I did not draw these: each one was combined by hand, watercoloured, and collaged onto a background. Each one had a name and a one-line back story that, at some point, I'll go back and add to the gallery.

Hopefully, somewhere around that time, I'll also remember the name of their lesser-known cousins, here temporarily renamed The Others.

Mugging for the camera?

I just received my first-ever order from Cafe Press - yes, I ordered something from my own Cafe Press store! I'd kinda wanted a Variants Mug ever since I'd put them in the shop, so I used my t-shirt sales money to reduce the price and gifted myself with one. My company is moving this summer, so it's a perfect excuse for a new mug, right? Right. Anyway, here's how it looks on the Cafe Press site:

And the physical product? It looks great! The lines are sharp, the colours are brilliant and true to the originals, and all with a nice, glossy finish! I'd put the artwork together for this mug from high-resolution scans of three original collages I'd done (and foolishly traded away) - three of my personal favourites of all the Variants - and it looks absolutely like I'd hoped.

Which reminds me, I really ought to upload them all somewhere, so they'd be available for people to see...

Anyway, the end reslt is this: Cafe Press stuff comes out really cool, in case you have ever wondered!

With a name like that, I couldn't resist. And for being "rats," they're actually kind of cute.

That is, if you don't think about their teeth...

I did the dog's paw, so I needed to do a cat's for symmetry. But this is the last of the experimentation with this particular batch of cardstock. It's just way too dark for me to work on comfortably.

Woof.

I was inspired to do a dog's paw by the way-too-talented Juj of hey juj when she posted rock, paper, scissors on Flickr and asked "what's a dog's foot skeleton look like?" Naturally, I had to go look, and that just led down the slippery slope to drawing it.

Brain pan

Okay, so this was an experiment! I picked up some coloured, 100% recycled card stock on impulse (and clearance!) at Michael's last Friday night. And the jury is still out on whether I like the results or not. It took the coloured pencil like warm toast takes butter, and that was fun. But, the scan makes this colour appear much lighter than it really is, so actually seeing the graphite pencil on it was a wee bit of a challenge. Of the 5 colours in the package, there are still 2 more I want to try, so be warned!
